Sarantel Partners with Locosys to Deliver High-Performance, Compact and Portable GPS “Smart Antenna” Module
Sarantel, the leading manufacturer of revolutionary filtering antennas for mobile and wireless devices, today announces the availability of a new “Smart Antenna” module from Taiwanese partner Locosys. This new design will enable product manufacturers to quickly embed high sensitivity GPS/RDS functionality into products ranging from PDAs to navigation devices.
The integrated receiver module RSC-2024 GPS/RDS combines high-performance GPS with an FM receiver that picks up RDS (Radio Data System) and TMC (Traffic Message System) data. These sources provide extra information like news, stock market information, speed trap locations and other real time traffic information. Navigation software that supports RSC-2024 GPS/RDS has the capability to show traffic information, and re-route drivers around traffic jams.
Locosys combined Sarantel’s GeoHelix-P2 GPS (GeoHelix) with its own SiRF Star III GPS and RDS/TMC receivers to create a small, power efficient module that drops into a consumer device with unprecedented ease.
The design portability of the GeoHelix was a chief reason Locosys partnered with Sarantel on this receiver. Commercially, it means that Locosys’ customers will be able to reduce their design and system costs and bring highly innovative products to market ahead of the competition.
Thanks to innovations from both companies, the Locosys module offers excellent performance to the user, rapidly acquiring a GPS fix even in poor RF environments or when the device is being used very close to the person.
